Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington, born on January 31, 1977 is an American actress, TV show producer, and film director. Some of her major roles have included hit TV shows such as Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, American Son, and Little Fires Everywhere. She has also starred in hit movies including Ray, Cars, Save the Last Dance, Confirmation, Django Unchained, Night Catches Us, Mother and Child, Lakeview Terrace, Tim Story Fantastic Four film series, The Prom, The Last King of Scotland, and so many more.

Kerry is the daughter of Earl Washington, a real estate broker, and Valerie Washington, a professor and educational consultant. Washington’s familial background consists of English, Scottish, Native American, and Caribbean. As a teenager, Washington attended Spence School in Manhattan and performed with the TADA! Youth Theater. She would go on to attend George Washington University where she double majored in anthropology and sociology.

 

During her earlier career, Kerry played a lead role in Spike Lee’s She Hate Me and received wonderful reviews for her performance. She also starred in roles on the TV series Boston Legal and in several episodes of 100 Centre Street.  In addition to film, Washington co-directed and made an appearance in the music video “I Want You” by Common in 2007 and would go on to also become a spokesperson for L’Oreal.

 

Washington has directed and produced shows including SMILF on Showtime, American Son on Netflix, and executive produced Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu. Washington would go on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) as a producer of the TV special Live in Front of a Studio Audience in 2020.

 

Outside of acting and producing, Kerri is a member of the Creative Coalition (board of actors, writers, musicians, and producers) that address issues of national discourse. She is also a member of V-Day, which is a global movement that increases awareness of violence against girls and women.

 

Washington currently resides in Los Angeles, CA and is married to NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha. They have two children.
